Ripples of Kindness

It’s positive Thursday! And my thought today is about ripples of kindness. Three days ago I came across a version of the story below and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Let me share it with you:

A young man was walking along the ocean and saw a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish had washed ashore. Further along he saw an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean.

“Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” he asked.

“Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.”

“But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, even if you work all day. It won’t make any difference at all.”

The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea.

“It made a difference to that one.”

The story is one of the many adaptations of “The Star Thrower” by Loren Eisley.

Yes, we can all make a difference! A simple act of kindness motivates others to do the same. You may not see it, or hear about it, but it happens just the same. Treasure the kindness that comes your way and set off new ripples one person, one moment, one act at a time. And I hope doing so makes your day.

“Kindness is language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”. ~Mark Twain
