Charli Mills’ January 19th Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge was to write a 99 word (no more, no less) story about a quarry. As always, Charli suggests we go where the prompt leads us, and this is where it led me.
***
“Mom, you’ll never guess what happened!” Emma ran into the kitchen, the back door banging shut behind her.
“There were cop cars at the quarry today. Simply everywhere! I know you told me I shouldn’t ever go there, but I just KNEW I had to have a look. I’ve been LONGING to do this ever since Joey told me there were ghosts there. It was SO exciting Mom. I even helped the police,” she said holding up a bundle of fur.
“See, I rescued the dead man’s puppy. The officer said I could keep him. I can, can’t I?”
Your flash captures that rush and tumble of words from an excited child who doesn’t take a breath to consider all that happened! A forbidden dangerous place, police, a dead man — certainly those are forgivable in the presence of a cute and orphaned puppy. 🙂

Something tells me that cute pup will have found a home in your house 🙂 Thanks Charli!

Yes! I recall a kitten the neighborhood teens found back when we lived in a small Montana town. One of them babysat for me when I had to get to class before Todd returned home from logging. They figured I would take the rescued kitten in, and I did. They named the kitty, Princess, but turned out to be a prince!

So it was a Prince Charming who enraptured everyone’s heart strings! That’s sweet. He had a good home with you – and that, I know for sure.

A cute puppy. But you were warned! How’s Mum going to react?

Speechless. That’s what my first reaction would be as a Mother, trying to take in all that my daughter had done. I left the Mothers reaction out of the story (99 words was a convenient restriction in this case), so every reader who has been or is a parent can imagine or feel their own response. I’m sure they’d be all over the map! How would you react?

Well, I’m not a puppy person, so that wouldn’t get her over the other hurdles for a start!!!! 🙂 I’d have to breathe deeply and consider my response.
