It’s natural for us to reflect upon the past and the future at this time of the year. I know I do. In reading different news articles and blogs on the web recently, I find that people generally fall into one of two camps: those who like resolutions or specific goals and those who don’t.
Resolution, by definition means “a firm decision to do or not do something”. In the corporate and business community, we are taught to set specific, time bound and measurable goals. And by publicizing them, we establish accountability and a resolution to meeting them.
Where’s the fluidity or flexibility in this? I’ve learned that Life has its own agenda and it does not always attune with mine. In fact, most of my internal strife, conflict and turmoil have arisen when my plans and Life’s plans are not in alignment.
This does not mean I don’t value the setting of goals – just not rigid and detailed ones for the duration of a whole year. Remember, each day is a new day with a fresh set of opportunities. It does not happen only once a year.
My sister-in-law sent me this New Year’s wish:
Today may there be peace within.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts that you have received and pass along the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

You know, I’ve always been one to set major goals. Always to “reach for something….” be it a race so I know to train for it, a book, so I know to write, a weight loss, so I know what to eat (you get the idea). But suddenly this year I made no goals. Nothing. And suddenly three days later I was presented with something I never expected. It’s like the universe answered me. I think I have my blog post for next week so thank you!

Oh I so agree. I’ve never liked “resolutions” and always try to pick a theme for the year to guide my decision making. I haven’t done so yet this year… too many other things going on and I want to give it the attention it deserves!

I do themes too. I’ve discovered that I need to let the theme find me and not the other way around. Looks like you are doing the same thing.
